Cocktails for Summer: The Mojito

Invented in Cuba and originally named El Draque, after the famous English sea captain, the mojito has been a favorite summer tipple since the nineteenth century. Its name is said to be a corruption of the Spanish term mojadito, meaning “a little wet” and its formula was devised as a means of sweetening the harsh taste of the rum used as its based spirit.

Here are the ingredients

1 1/2 oz White rum

6 leaves of Mint

Soda Water

1 oz Fresh lime juice

2 teaspoons Sugar

To make a mojito, place ten fresh mint leaves in a sturdy highball glass with a wedge of lime and crush them with a muddler to release the juices and essential oils. Add two more wedges of lime and two tablespoons of sugar and muddle. Next, fill the glass almost to the top with ice. Add a measure of white rum, fill the rest of the way with carbonated water, stir, garnish with a lime wedge and enjoy.

Standard garnish

Sprig of mint

Yerba buena
