Planter’s Punch is a must-try cocktail for any rum aficionado. Though its origin is an appreciably contested point of debate, most people agree that it was invented in the 19th century by Jamaican rum distiller Fred L. Myers.
This cocktail’s recipe has been altered numerous times through the years, but the constant and key ingredients are orange and/or pineapple juice and especially dark rum. Many purists typically would argue that Myers’s Dark Rum, which uses pure Jamaican molasses, should be the base spirit for Planter’s Punch on account of the fact that said tipple was used in the invention of said drink.
To make a Planter’s Punch, mix equal parts Myers Dark Rum with pineapple-orange juice in an ice-filled mixer, add a splash of grenadine, stir and strain into a tall cocktail glass. Top with club soda, if you would like, and garnish with a lemon and/or orange slice and a cherry.
