Santa Monica Tech: The Comeback Story of Silicon Beach
If you know anything about the LA tech world, you’ve definitely heard of “Silicon Beach.” It’s this sprawling, sun-drenched hub of innovation that stretches across the Westside. But let’s zoom in on where so much of the magic first started: Santa Monica. Long before “Silicon Beach” was a trending hashtag, Santa Monica was the heart of LA’s tech ambitions, a place where big ideas met beachside vibes. We were there for it all, and trust us, the story is far from over.
We launched Schmoozd, our offline social networking event, right here in Santa Monica back in 2009. Our home base was often the WOKCANO restaurant, but we also bounced around the coolest co-working spaces of the time, like BLANKSPACES and CrossCampus. The energy was electric! Santa Monica wasn’t just a place to work; it was a community. It was the epicenter of a movement, and now, it’s poised for an epic comeback.
The Golden Days of Santa Monica Tech
Let’s rewind the clock. In the late 2000s and early 2010s, Santa Monica was the place to be for any aspiring tech founder. It wasn’t just the ocean breeze or the world-class coffee shops; it was the incredible concentration of talent and ambition packed into a few square miles. This place was buzzing with the kind of creative chaos that fuels innovation.
You couldn’t walk down the Third Street Promenade without bumping into someone coding the next big thing. Major players set up shop here, making the city a true tech powerhouse. Google established a huge office, bringing its global influence to the local scene. ZipRecruiter launched and built its headquarters here, fundamentally changing the hiring game from a Santa Monica office. A little further down in Venice, but still very much part of the same ecosystem, SnapChat was born, revolutionizing social media as we know it.

Beyond the giants, a vibrant ecosystem of startups flourished. Remember GoodReads? That was a Santa Monica success story. So were companies like DogVacay, which changed pet care forever, and GumGum, a pioneer in contextual advertising.
Remember BIRD, the electric scooter company that took Santa Monica by storm. Launched right here, BIRD transformed the way people think about urban transportation. By introducing a convenient, eco-friendly alternative to cars, it quickly became a symbol of the micromobility revolution, helping locals and visitors alike zip along the streets with ease.
And then there was Beachmint, a shining star in the subscription commerce trend. Based in Santa Monica, Beachmint brought together technology, style, and celebrity endorsements to redefine personalized shopping experiences.
The city was a hotbed for creativity, a vibrant hub that drew dreamers, innovators, and builders from every corner of the world. Its streets buzzed with energy, filled with artists sketching their visions, entrepreneurs pitching big ideas, and engineers crafting the next groundbreaking technologies.
This explosive growth was supercharged by a new wave of startup accelerators. Places like Science, Inc. and Mucker became legendary for their ability to spot and nurture early-stage companies, providing the capital, mentorship, and connections needed to turn brilliant ideas into viable businesses. They were the kingmakers of Silicon Beach, and their presence solidified Santa Monica’s status as a top-tier tech hub.
The Community That Built Silicon Beach
What truly made Santa Monica special, though, was the community. It was more than just a collection of companies; it was a scene. Events like Schmoozd became the lifeblood of this community, bringing together founders, investors, developers, and creatives. We would pack into WOKCANO, sharing stories, debating ideas, and forging the connections that would lead to new companies, partnerships, and friendships. The vibe was collaborative, not cutthroat. Everyone wanted to see everyone else succeed.
Co-working spaces were the physical manifestation of this spirit. CoLoft, ROC, General Assembly, BLANKSPACES, and CrossCampus weren’t just offices; they were incubators of innovation. They provided a space for freelancers and small teams to work alongside each other, fostering a culture of shared knowledge and mutual support. It felt like we were all part of something bigger, building the future together, one line of code and one handshake at a time.

The Great Slowdown and the Pandemic Punch
But then, things started to change. Even before 2020, the scene began to feel a bit… different. The explosive growth started to level off. Rents skyrocketed, making it harder for bootstrapped startups to find a foothold. The very success that had put Santa Monica on the map began to create new challenges.
Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and it felt like someone just pulled the plug. The bustling streets went quiet. The vibrant co-working spaces emptied out. Tech companies went fully remote, and much of the talent that had flocked to Santa Monica moved on, seeking more affordable places to live. The city that had once been a beacon of innovation began to face serious struggles, including a visible increase in homelessness. For a moment, it felt like the golden era of Santa Monica tech was officially over. The energy, the community, the magic—it all seemed to disappear overnight.
The Dawn of a New Era: Santa Monica’s Revival
Here’s the thing about Santa Monica, though: it’s resilient. The spirit that made it a tech powerhouse in the first place never truly went away. And now, we’re starting to see the green shoots of a major comeback. A new wave of energy is sweeping through the city, driven by a determination to rebuild and reimagine what Silicon Beach can be.
We’re all in on this revival. Schmoozd is partnering with other top event producers in town to reignite the community spirit that once defined the scene. We’re bringing back the meetups, the networking nights, and the collaborative energy that sparks innovation. It’s about creating spaces where the next generation of founders can connect, learn, and grow together.
A huge part of this comeback story is our partnership with BLANKSPACES. They’ve opened a brand-new location in Santa Monica, right on Colorado (929 Colorado Ave, Santa Monica), in the very same spot where CrossCampus once thrived. It feels like a full-circle moment, a symbolic return to the collaborative roots of Silicon Beach. This new space is more than just an office; it’s a statement that Santa Monica is open for business and ready to reclaim its place as a central hub for tech and creativity.
The timing couldn’t be better. The tech world is buzzing with the potential of AI, and Los Angeles is emerging as a global leader in the field. Events like LA Tech Week are drawing international attention, highlighting the incredible talent and innovation in the region. Santa Monica is perfectly positioned to capture this new wave of excitement and become a focal point for the AI revolution. Major venture firms like Andreessen Horowitz are even setting up shop in LA to focus on local gaming and entertainment startups, signaling that the investment world has its eyes firmly fixed on Silicon Beach.
Leadership Spotlight: Dan Negari
Dan Negari, CEO of XYZ, has played a pivotal role in revitalizing the spirit of collaboration and innovation in Santa Monica. His leadership in bringing BLANKSPACES back has re-established a vital hub for entrepreneurs and creators, fostering a community that thrives on shared ideas and growth.
Furthermore, by acquiring multiple properties on the iconic Third Street Promenade, Negari has not only activated the area but also breathed new life into one of Santa Monica’s most beloved landmarks, creating opportunities for businesses to flourish and reconnecting the community to its vibrant, creative roots.

The comeback is on. With new partnerships, a renewed sense of community, and a wave of technological innovation on the horizon, Santa Monica is ready for its next act. It’s time to bring the energy, the ideas, and the people back to the beach. We were there when it all began, and we can’t wait to be part of what comes next.
